Making Turkey Saddles

Making Turkey Saddles

The first time I heard “turkey saddle” I really wasn’t sure exactly WHAT one was … or WHY one would need a turkey saddle… well, now that our oldest son has been raising Heritage Breed turkeys we now know what a turkey saddle is and why one is needed! During breeding season, the tom turkeys can be a bit hard on the hens; sometimes causing mild to severe damage to the hens backs. The turkey saddle is made of a piece of fairly heavy duty material and sits over the hen’s back to protect her from the Toms feet. All this said, today Addison informed me that some of his hens are getting scratched up & he needed to buy some turkey saddles … after looking them up I decided we could make our own. πŸ™‚ So, armed with a pair of worn-out carhart coveralls, and a cardboard pattern (made from an empty cereal box πŸ™‚ ), we set to work to make his Royal Palm a turkey saddle. #1) Addison cutting out pieces of usable fabric. #2) Traced out 2 pieces from our pattern. #3) Sewed front & back together w/a piece of elastic on the top(front). #4) Sewed snaps on each end of elastic. #5) Tried it on our Royal Palm Model πŸ™‚ She was a bit unsure of it at first, but then she got used to it quickly. πŸ™‚
